A hearty meal to warm up the soul during those cooler nights!


  • 4 good size pieces (1.6kg) of chuck steak or gravy beef fat removed and discarded, cut into 2cm cubes
  • 1/2 cup Plain flour
  • 1/2 cup Olive oil
  • 2 cups (150g) Mushrooms, sliced
  • 5 French shallots peeled and chopped
  • 4 rashers middle cut bacon, rind removed and chopped
  • 1 can stout
  • 1 can (375ml) Guinness

Step 1

Preheat oven to 180°C.

Step 2

Dust the beef cubes in flour and remove excess.

Step 3

Heat the Saute Pan over medium heat for 2 minutes. Reduce heat slightly.

Step 4

Add oil and brown meat in batches. Set aside.

Step 5

Cook the mushrooms, shallots and bacon in the pan for approx 5 minutes. Stir occasionally.

Step 6

Return meat, mushrooms, shallots and bacon to pan and add the beer. Stir to combine. Bring to the boil.

Step 7

Cover and bake for 2.5 hours.

Chef's Tips

You can use 2 cans of Guinness if stout is unavailable.



I would add carrots or turnips or maybe both!
